Even the most seemingly relaxed people deal with stress on a daily basis. Stress includes the feeling of being overwhelmed and your body’s reaction to a challenge or perceived demand. Stress can come from negative life experiences—like dealing with credit card debt, having an overscheduled workday, or getting into a disagreement with a friend. But stress can also come from positive experiences—like an exciting move to a new city or a highly-desired job promotion—that require a lot of planning or extra responsibility.
Dr. Krystal M. Lewis is a licensed clinical psychologist and researcher in the National Institute of Mental Health Intramural Research Program. In this video, Dr. Lewis explains what stress is and the parts of the brain that play a role in how we experience stress.
